Minister Hautala to travel to Brussels for Somalia conference – Finland to double aid to Somalia

Press release 195/2013
13 September 2013

Donor countries and international organisations are meeting in Brussels on Monday,16 September 2013 for a high-level Somalia conference. The conference is due to announce a joint set of principles specifying the key priorities and goals for the delivery of aid to Somalia over the next three years. Minister for International Development Heidi Hautala will tell the conference that as of 2014, Finland will be doubling its aid to Somalia.

Somalia has seen important advances in its political development, but the security situation in the country remains highly fragile. The aim of the meeting will be to improve cooperation between the Somalian government and donor agencies and to find ways of ensuring that the aid reaches its intended recipients and that is has a tangible benefit to the country’s development. Key issues on the conference agenda include Somalia’s political development, the country’s social and economic reconstruction as well as its rule of law development and security situation.

Finnish assistance to Somalia has amounted to some nine million euros a year, consisting of humanitarian aid, bilateral projects and support for NGOs. Finland has now decided to almost double its aid to Somalia as of 2014. If reliable international funding channels can be set up as planned, Finland can move to increase its aim volume very quickly.

Minister Hautala visited Somalia in April 2013 together with Foreign Minister Erkki Tuomioja. As well as providing first hand information about the situation in Somalia, this visit offered an excellent opportunity to support the Somalian government in its efforts to push forward with its development plans.

In connection with the conference Minister Hautala will hold bilateral talks with Somalian President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud.
