World Bank Chief Economist to visit Finland

Press release 281/2012
23 November 2012

World Bank Chief Economist Kaushik Basu will visit Helsinki from 26 to 27 November 2012. During his visit, he will meet Minister for International Development Heidi Hautala, Director General of the Financial Markets Department at the Ministry of Finance Pentti Pikkarainen, and various MPs, including the members of the Parliamentary Foreign Affairs Committee.

In addition, he will deliver a lecture at the World Institute for Development Economic Research (UNU-WIDER) titled “Global Crisis and the Impact on Emerging Economies”. Over luncheon, he will also meet Finnish economists.

Kaushik Basu took over as Chief Economist of World Bank in October 2012. As Chief Economist he also serves as the banking group’s Senior Vice President responsible for the bank’s wide-ranging research activities, such as production of the World Development Report (WDR), published on an annual basis.

Kaushik Basu comes from India and has served, for instance, in the Ministry of Finance of India as Chief Economic Adviser to the Government of India. Earlier, Mr. Basu was Professor of Economics at the Delhi School of Economics. He holds a PhD in economics from the London School of Economics.

Kaushik Basu has published numerous papers and authored books, including Analytical Development Economics (1997 MIT Press) and Prelude to Political Economy: A Study of the Social and Political Foundations of Economics (2000, Oxford University Press).

Finland supports production of the WDR through World Bank’s Knowledge for Change Programme (KCP), being one of its biggest donors.
