EU Foreign Affairs Council to discuss Russia, Japan, Iraq and the EU’s Southern Neighbourhood

The EU Foreign Affairs Council will convene in Brussels on 11 March. The agenda for the meeting includes Russia, Japan, Iraq and the EU’s Southern Neighbourhood. Syria will be the topic of discussion at the Council’s lunch. Finland will be represented at the meeting by Foreign Minister Erkki Tuomioja.

With regard to Russia, the Foreign Affairs Council will discuss the main objectives of EU–Russia relations, including the central foreign policy issues.

The discussion on Japan will concentrate on preparations for the EU–Japan Summit to be held at the end of March, and on the global economy and security.

The Foreign Affairs Council discussion on Iraq will focus not only on the current situation but also on the impacts the situation in Syria has on Iraq as well as relations between the EU and Iraq.

As to the EU’s Southern Neighbourhood, the main topics of the Foreign Affairs Council discussion will be the current situations in Egypt, Tunisia and Libya; with regard to Libya, also preparations for the EU’s border security mission.

Syria will be the topic of discussion at the Council’s lunch. The guest at the Council’s lunch will be Lakhdar Brahimi, Special Envoy of the United Nations and the Arab League. The discussion will concentrate on the current situation in Syria.

After the Foreign Affairs Council, Foreign Minister Tuomioja will be a speaker at the Policy Dialogue event, Shaping the EU system of diplomacy: the European External Action Service and the future of foreign policy, arranged by the European Policy Centre (EPC) and the Finnish Institute of International Affairs (FIIA).
