Antti Hartikainen appointed to lead the EU’s future civilian crisis management mission in Libya

Antti Hartikainen, Director General of Finnish Customs, has been appointed to lead the Civilian CSDP Mission on Border Security in Libya.

Before being nominated Director General Hartikainen held the position of Team Leader of the European Union Advisory Group to Armenia. In the past he was a colonel in the Finnish Border Guard, and he has previously served in several European Union positions. He has extensive experience of international border security cooperation, civilian crisis management tasks and customs operations.

The future border security mission in Libya will be launched in the framework of the EU´s civilian crisis management and is an important part of the EU’s support to stabilize Libya. The mission will support the strengthening of Libya’s border security by training Libyan border security authorities and by assisting in the development of the border security system. The core team of the border security mission will begin its activities under Hartikainen’s leadership in mid-April. The mission will be launched in June.
