The EU Foreign Affairs Council will convene in Luxembourg on 22 April. The meeting agenda includes energy issues in external relations, EU Eastern Partnership and Southern Neighbourhood, Mali and Myanmar. Finland’s representative in the meeting will be Foreign Minister Erkki Tuomioja.
In relation to Eastern Partnership, the Foreign Affairs Council will discuss the preparations for the Eastern Partnership Summit, to be held in Vilnius next autumn. The situation of the association agreements under negotiation with eastern partner countries will also be addressed.
As regards EU Southern Neighbourhood, the main topics of discussion at the Foreign Affairs Council will include the topical situations in Syria, Lebanon and Egypt. The focus will be on the situation of Syria in particular, including the status of the opposition and the impact of the Syrian crisis on Lebanon.
In its discussion about Mali, in addition to the current situation and the EU measures, the Foreign Affairs Council will focus on the UN plans concerning Mali.
The ministers will also discuss the situation of Myanmar and the EU measures in support of the development in the country.
The topic of discussion over Foreign Affairs Council lunch will be energy. The special guest at lunch will be Günther Oettinger, EU Commissioner for energy. Discussion will concern implementation of Europe's southern gas corridor in particular.
On 22 April, Foreign Minister Tuomioja will also participate in the General Affairs Council discussion on EU enlargement and the situation in Western Balkans. The discussion will concern the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM) and the dialogue between Serbia and Kosovo in particular. As regards FYROM, the debate will be based on the Commission Report on progress made by FYROM in its bid to join the EU. As regards the dialogue between Serbia and Kosovo, the Council will discuss the latest situation of the dialogue.
