Foreign Minister Erkki Tuomioja: Europe’s competitiveness in the future must be based on fair labour markets

 Press release 232/2013
1 November 2013

According to Foreign Minister Erkki Tuomioja, Europe’s competitiveness in the future will be based on the fairness of labour markets. A major success factor for the region in the future is a more social Europe. This is important also in the Baltic region.

In Minister Tuomioja’s view, extensive cooperation with social partners – between trade unions and employers – will be continue to be needed.

At the same time as care is taken to ensure the competitiveness of Europe and its regions, it is important that the rights and working conditions of employees are also at the right level in the future. In the long term, this is in the best interests of both employees and employers, and it is a factor of sustainable growth.

Foreign Minister Erkki Tuomioja spoke on Friday, 1 November at the Baltic Sea Labour Forum (BSLF) Helsinki. The BSLF is a permanent forum of social dialogue in the Baltic Sea region; it was established in 2011. The tripartite participants in the Forum’s work are the trade union movement, employer organizations, and governments and parliaments throughout the Baltic Sea region. At present the Baltic Sea Labour Forum has 28 member organizations and 9 observer organizations.
