Minister for International Development Heidi Hautala will visit Mozambique and Zambia on 28 October - 2 November. The two countries and Finland have enjoyed long-lasting bilateral development cooperation relations.
In Mozambique Minister Hautala will lead the country program negotiations for deciding the focuses of Finnish-Mozambican cooperation for the forthcoming years. Finland's aid to Mozambique is predominantly targeted to agriculture and forestry, education and innovations and development of good governance. Moreover, Finland grants budgetary support to Mozambique. There's a purpose to diversify cooperation in the future to include trade and economic cooperation. Finnish aid to Mozambique is about EUR 27 million in total this year.
In Zambia, Minister Hautala's agenda includes signing a bilateral contract on Finnish support to build up basic security for the poorest in the country. Finland supports the environmental and natural resources sector (including forests), agriculture and rural areas, and development of the private sector in Zambia. In addition to the above, Finland grants budgetary support to Zambia and promotes good governance. Finnish aid to Zambia is about EUR 17 million in total this year. Having enjoyed significant economic growth, Zambia has become one of the top African export countries for Finland in the recent years.
During her trip Minister Heidi Hautala will meet with ministerial colleagues from the two countries, including Minister for Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of Mozambique Oldemiro Balói. The meeting agendas include bilateral relations, development programmes funded by Finland and current development cooperation themes such as control over natural resources. Minister Hautala will also meet representatives of the Parliaments, other development contributors, UN organisations and local and Finnish NGOs. Moreover, Hautala will be acquainted with agricultural development cooperation and visit villages where the development programmes are up and running.
