The permanent missions of Finland, Tunisia and Uruguya in Geneva organized a side event “Ending Corporal Punishment of Children” to the Universal Periodic Review sessions of the Human Right Council on 22 January 2013. The event consisted of an impressive panel of six experts, a video message from the UN Special Representative on Violence against children and a public debate. Nearly full room of audience suggested a great interest towards the topic.
Many different insights to the topic were offered. The remarks pointed out the effects of both physical and psychological injuries on the future of the children and their behavior. It was noted that corporal punishment violates the child’s human dignity and physical integrity. The speakers further emphasized that violence against children is always unacceptable and can be prevented.
Few states escape criticism related to violence against children. The Ambassador of Finland, H.E. Päivi Kairamo, expressed gratitude towards the great number of recommendations concerning corporal punishment of children and violence against children given to different countries during the first round of the Universal Periodic Review. The cause has gained attention within the UN framework, and hopefully, also more practical measures will be seen for the implementation of the recommendations worldwide.
