Foreign Minister Erkki Tuomioja will participate in the Theme Session of the Nordic Council in Stockholm on 11 April.
Within the past few years, Nordic foreign, security and defence policy cooperation has been promoted in major extent, on the basis of the report from 2009 by the former Norwegian Foreign and Defence Minister Thorvald Stoltenberg in particular. In the Session, the Nordic ministers responsible for foreign, security and defence policy and Nordic Council parliamentarians debate further prospects for closer cooperation. The topics of discussion include, for example, comprehensive concept of security, joint action in civilian crisis management and cyber security. This is the first time the Nordic Council devotes a separate Theme Session for foreign, security and defence policy.
Finland holds the chairmanship of the Nordic Defense Cooperation (NORDEFCO) in 2013, and Defence Minister Carl Haglund will also attend the Session.
After the debate, a press conference will be held at 2 pm local time at Mittpoolen, Swedish Parliament.
