Finland chairs the WIPO General Assembly

The Permanent Representative of Finland in Geneva, Ambassador Päivi Kairamo, chairs the General Assembly at the 53rd Series of Assemblies of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) from 8 to 9 May. The General Assembly appointed Mr Francis Gurry from Australia as the Director General of the WIPO for a second six-year term. The General Assembly also discusses a possible diplomatic conference on the design law treaty.

The World Intellectual Property Organization, established in 1967, currently has 186 Member States. The latest major achievements of the WIPO include the 2013 Marrakech Treaty, aimed at improving the availability of published materials for visually impaired persons, and the 2012 Beijing Treaty on audiovisual representations.
