Minister for International Development Haavisto to ASEM Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in India

Press release 238/2013
8 November 2013

Minister for International Development Pekka Haavisto will participate in the ASEM Foreign Ministers’ Meeting to be held in New Delhi, India, on 11–12 November. ASEM (Asia–Europe Meeting) is a cooperation forum for Asia and Europe, with the objective of strengthening dialogue and mutual understanding between the two regions.

The prerequisites of sustainable economic development and rising security threats are among the themes of the 11th Foreign Ministers’ Meeting. In his address, Minister Haavisto will highlight, for example, the importance of equal distribution of economic growth and clean technologies for promotion of sustainable development.

The topics of the free-form retreat, organised for the first time as part of the ASEM Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, include regional and global foreign policy issues of current interest. In this context, Minister Haavisto will emphasise issues related to the development of fragile states. In addition to the actual meeting programme, Minister Haavisto will have bilateral meetings with ministers of Asian countries.

ASEM covers a wide range of subjects in the political, economic, social and cultural sectors. ASEM brings together 49 countries, the European Commission and ASEAN, the cooperation organisation of Southeast Asian nations. The first ASEM Summit was held in Bangkok, Thailand, in 1996. Since then heads of state have been meeting every two years alternately in Asia and Europe. In its capacity as the holder of EU Presidency in 2006, Finland organised the ASEM6 Summit in Helsinki. In addition to summits, other ministerial level meetings are also held regularly under the auspices of ASEM. The first ASEM Foreign Ministers’ Meeting was held in Singapore in 1997.
