Press release 85/2014
9 April 2014
Minister for International Development Pekka Haavisto will travel to Washington, D.C., on 10–12 April and to New York on 13–14 April. During his trip, Haavisto will participate in the World Bank Spring Meetings and meet UN leaders. The topics of discussion will include the post-2015 global UN development goals, currently under preparation, and the issues of peace and security.
In Washington, D.C., Minister Haavisto will represent Finland in the World Bank Spring Meetings, and the joint World Bank-IMF Development Committee meeting. The main theme of the Development Committee will be how the World Bank Group could support developing countries to achieve economic growth shared more widely across populations.
In connection with the Spring Meetings, Haavisto will participate in, for example, a debate on the economic impacts of climate change, chaired by Managing Director of IMF Christine Lagarde, President of the World Bank Jim Yong Kim, and UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. Other topics of discussion at the high-level panels Haavisto will attend include peacebuilding in Africa; inequality and illegal capital flows; and water and sanitation issues.
In addition, in Washington Haavisto will meet, for example, President of the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) Kanayo F. Nwanze, and several representatives of the US Administration, think tanks and NGOs.
In New York, Minister Haavisto will have meetings with, for instance, Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations Jan Eliasson and Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon's Special Adviser Amina J. Mohammed.
The discussions will focus particularly on fragile states; issues of peace and development; the situations in, for example, the Horn of Africa and the Central African Republic; and the post-2015 global UN development goals, currently under preparation.
Many of the meetings are related to Minister Haavisto’s chairmanship of the international forum promoting the development of fragile states (the International Dialogue on Peacebuilding and Statebuilding (IDPS)). The IDPS focuses on countries suffering from conflicts and instability, and it brings together the fragile states, international donors and the civil society.
