Under-Secretary of State Laajava reports on preparations for Middle East Conference to be held in Helsinki

Facilitator for the Conference on the establishment of a Middle East zone free of weapons of mass destruction, Under-Secretary of State Jaakko Laajava gave an interim report to the States parties of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty in New York on 1 May 2014.

According to Laajava there has been progress in the Conference preparations among the States of the Middle East region during the past year. Laajava and the conveners of the Conference, namely the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States, held several informal meetings with the participation of States of the region. Talks focused on the Conference and its preparations. In his report Laajava emphasized the need for the States of the region to continue constructive mutual engagement.

Consultations with the States of the region are scheduled to continue in May. Finland is prepared to host the Conference without delay once convened.
