Finland and Norway intensify their Arctic cooperation

Press release 115/2014
12.5.2014

Foreign Minister of Norway Børge Brende will visit Finland on Thursday 13–14 May and meet Foreign Minister Erkki Tuomioja.

The Foreign Ministers will discuss, for example, topical foreign policy issues such as Russia and Ukraine, Syria, Middle East, Sudan, the Central African Republic, regional cooperation, and mediation.

Minister Brende will also meet President of the Republic Sauli Niinistö and Minister for International Development Pekka Haavisto. Haavisto and Brende will discuss the current crises in the Horn of Africa region, and the post-2015 UN development goals.

The Arctic Partnership between the two countries will also be discussed during the visit. Finland and Norway have a number of common interests with regard to development of the Arctic region. The aim of the Arctic Partnership between the countries is to further strengthen both economic and scientific cooperation. The sector ministries in both countries are examining the possibilities, for example, of strengthening student exchange and research cooperation, deepening the bilateral dialogue on transport and logistics, as well as promoting border region cooperation and the movement of labour and services within established bilateral and regional cooperation structures.

The cornerstones of the partnership are the 730-kilometre joint border, close contacts and complementary skills; closer cooperation would serve the interests of both Finland and Norway.

President Niinistö raised the idea of the Arctic Partnership already during his State visit to Norway in October 2012.
