Finland supports UNESCO’s education and freedom of expression work in the poorest countries: Minister for International Development Pekka Haavisto and Director-General Irina Bokova sign a financing agreement

Press release 140/2014
12 June 2014

Minister for International Development Pekka Haavisto will meet Director-General of United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Irina Bokova on Friday 13 June. A financing agreement concerning development cooperation between Finland and UNESCO for 2014–2015 will be signed in connection with the meeting.

The financing provided by Finland is targeted for supporting the development of education, and the freedom of communication and expression in the least developed countries. In its assistance for UNESCO, Finland lays emphasis on the education of women and girls; vocational and technical education and training; freedom of expression; free access to information; support for information society development; and security of journalists. The total value of the agreement is EUR 2.4 million. UNESCO cooperation is one way of strengthening Finnish support for education and training in development countries.
